After a two-day weather delay, the Mount Pleasant Tigers didn’t miss a beat as they took care of business at home early Thursday evening. Kelcey Morris matched his career high of 23 points, the third time he’s reached that mark this season as the Tigers maintained their unblemished record on the season.
It was slow going early on as both teams took a while to get things revved, possibly due to the early start time and having a few extra days off. Texas High would be the first to get on the board and go up 2-0 but that would be the only lead they would take the rest of the game. Payton Chism scored a driving layup two and half minutes to get the Tigers on the scoreboard and knot things at 2-2. A nice feed from Kelcey Morris to Kyler Smith would put the Tigers up 4-2 and they would never look back extending the lead to the 13-7 after the first quarter. The second quarter would be all Tigers as Mount Pleasant forced Texas High into 8 turnovers resulting in 18 points that fueled a 21-5 run to open the frame. Mount Pleasant would extend the lead to 36-17 at the break.
Texas High would put together a few positive plays cutting the lead to 50-34 at the end of the third quarter. But there just weren’t enough stops the orange Tigers could muster as the black and gold maintained their lead the rest of the way. Kelcey Morris’ 23 points (9-13 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 4-5 FT) were accompanied by 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals as he was the only Mount Pleasant player to score in double figures. Reggie Webster thefted a game-high 4 steals as he and Luke Hampton each poured in 8 points. Jordyn Hurndon and Kai Price each posted 7 points as Price pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds. Payton Chism posted numbers across the stat sheet with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Xavier Hills added 4 points while Kyler Smith and Carter Chism each had 2 points.
The Tigers (29-0, 10-0) have a quick turnaround as they play host to Pine Tree(10-15, 2-8) tonight with all three teams back on the schedule. Freshmen will tip at 5:00 PM, followed by the JV at 6:15 PM and the Varsity at 7:30 PM. Mount Pleasant just needs to win two of their remaining four district games to clinch their third district championship in the last four years. Tickets can be purchased online at
